Tens of thousands of Iranians marched in Tehran and other cities on April 14 to mark Quds Day, an annual show of support organized by Islamic Republic in solidarity with the Palestinians.

Senior officials attended the demonstration in the capital, including President Ebrahim Raisi, who said that the rallies in Iranian cities showed Palestinian militant groups fighting Israel “are not alone.”

He also criticized the normalization of ties between Israel and some Persian Gulf Arab states, claiming that it will not bring security to the region.

State TV showed footage of demonstrators carrying Palestinian flags and banners of the Iran-backed Lebanese militant Hezbollah group. Some participants chanted “Death to America” and “Death to Israel,” and set fire to American and Israeli flags, as well as effigies of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

The rallies were the first Quds Day demonstrations since Iran was shaken by months of anti-government protests sparked by the September death of a young woman in police custody. The demonstrations quickly escalated into calls for the overthrow of the Islamic Republic.

Al-Quds is the Arabic name for Jerusalem, the contested city at the heart of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Israel captured the eastern part of Jerusalem in 1967 and annexed it to its capital. The Palestinians seek east Jerusalem as a future capital.
