The European Union has announced a one-year extension of its sanctions against Iran, citing the country's ongoing support for Russia and its involvement in heightening tensions in the Middle East.
The decision, made public on Monday, will keep the restrictive measures in place until July 27, 2025.
According to the EU's statement, the sanctions target 12 individuals and 9 entities associated with the Islamic Republic.
These measures include asset freezes within the EU and a prohibition on providing funds or economic resources, directly or indirectly, to the sanctioned entities.
Additionally, travel bans to EU member states have been imposed on the individuals named in the sanctions list.
The EU emphasized that these restrictive measures will undergo annual reviews to assess their effectiveness and relevance.
"In its conclusions of 17 and 18 April 2024, the European Council reiterated its commitment to taking further restrictive measures against Iran, notably in relation to unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and missiles," the EU said in a statement.
"Finally, the European Council reiterated that the EU remained fully committed to contributing to de-escalation and security in the region.
"On 14 May 2024, the Council broadened the scope of the EU framework for restrictive measures in view of Iran’s military support for Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine, so as to cover both drones and missiles, as well as the Iranian drone and missile program’s support for armed groups and entities in the Middle East and the Red Sea region."
