Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has declined Egypt’s formal invitation to attend an international Gaza peace summit in Sharm el-Sheikh, Iran’s presidential information office announced on Sunday.
According to the announcement, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi briefed the Iranian cabinet on the invitation and Iran’s decision to reject it.
On Monday, Hamas released all remaining hostages from Gaza under a deal with Israel to end the two-year war.
Araghchi also disclosed that Egypt later extended an invitation for him to attend the summit, though it remains unclear whether he will participate.
Earlier, the Tasnim News Agency, affiliated with Iran’s Revolutionary Guards, cited an informed source confirming that Iran would not take part in the summit despite receiving an invitation.
The American news outlet Axios reported on Saturday that the event is being organized by U.S. President Donald Trump and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi. Axios also published an image of the invitation sent by Trump to world leaders.
Trump is scheduled to depart for the Middle East on Monday to attend the summit.
According to Axios, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will not participate, though Iran was included on the invitation list.
Leaders and senior officials from Germany, France, Britain, Italy, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Jordan, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, and Indonesia are expected to attend in support of Trump’s peace plan.
