The Israeli military announced on Monday morning, June 8, that it had targeted military sites in western and central Iran. The strikes were carried out a few hours after Iran fired several missiles toward targets in Israel in response to an Israeli attack on the southern suburbs of Beirut.
Meanwhile, Yechiel Leiter, Israel's ambassador to the United States, said in a post on X, formerly Twitter, that following the launch of Iranian ballistic missiles, the Israeli military targeted surface-to-surface missile launch sites and infrastructure that "were not connected to the energy sector."
In his message, Israel's ambassador to the US also wrote that the Islamic Republic of Iran fired 11 ballistic missiles toward Israel, adding: "No country would tolerate such an attack. In the event of a Hezbollah attack on Israel, the group's command centers in Beirut's Dahiyeh will be targeted with severe strikes."
According to Reuters, the fresh attacks took place even though US President Donald Trump had previously stated that the new strikes by Israel and Iran would not impact his administration's negotiations with Tehran to achieve a peace agreement.
In an interview with the Financial Times, Trump said: "This will have no effect on the deal."
Trump also remarked regarding Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu: "I decide. I make all the decisions. He is not the decision-maker."
Reuters, quoting an Israeli official, reported that Trump and Netanyahu spoke by phone on Sunday for less than 30 minutes. According to Reuters, a US official told Axios that during the call, Trump asked Netanyahu to refrain from further attacks, as he believed the parties were close to "doing something good regarding the deal."
The Islamic Republic's Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) also announced that Israel targeted sites inside Iran using air-launched ballistic missiles. The IRGC claimed that it had targeted the Ramat David airbase near Nazareth.
The Israeli military stated that it had detected the missiles fired from Iran and that the country's defence systems intercepted them.
