Lebanon has refused $60 million in aid from Iran, citing international sanctions, Iran’s ambassador to Lebanon said.
Mojtaba Amani said in an interview that the Islamic Republic offered the aid to support Lebanon, but the Lebanese government declined to accept it.
Lebanese officials said the aid is subject to international sanctions, Amani said.
The Iranian ambassador criticized the decision, saying the United States has not fulfilled its aid promises to Lebanon after three years, while Lebanon refuses Iranian assistance.
“At a time when Lebanon is grappling with economic and social crises, this aid could have solved part of the people’s problems,” Amani said.
Any financial dealings or aid from Iran face international restrictions due to intensified U.S. sanctions.
The Lebanese government cited these sanctions in refusing the aid.
Ali Larijani, secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, said during a visit to Lebanon that Iran is ready to help with Lebanon’s reconstruction following Israeli attacks.
