The White House shared a post on X stating that the President of the United States has ordered preparations to escort oil tankers through the Strait of Hormuz “if necessary.”
On Tuesday, March 3, the President of the United States announced: “As of this moment, I have instructed the U.S. International Development Finance Corporation to provide political risk insurance and guarantees for the financial security of all maritime trade at a very reasonable price.”
He emphasized: “If necessary, the United States Navy will begin escorting tankers in the Strait of Hormuz as soon as possible.”
The comments were made against the backdrop of escalating regional tensions and increasing worries about the safety of vessels navigating one of the world’s most critical energy corridors.
The Strait of Hormuz is the world’s most important oil “choke point.” Roughly 20–30% of the world’s total oil consumption passes through this narrow stretch of water between Iran and Oman. Control over the Strait is Iran’s primary geopolitical leverage; the regime frequently threatens to close it to disrupt the global economy if it is attacked.
