The Wall Street Journal, citing Middle Eastern officials on Tuesday, April 7, reported that Tehran has severed its direct diplomatic communications with Washington.
According to the report, despite the cessation of direct contact, discussions between the two sides continue through ceasefire mediators, meaning this move does not represent a total collapse of negotiations.
The Wall Street Journal noted that this decision has complicated efforts to reach an agreement before the 8:00 PM Tuesday deadline, though it has not ended the negotiating process. One official familiar with the matter told the newspaper that, by cutting direct ties, Iran intended to send a message of “dissatisfaction and resistance.”
The report added that it remains unclear whether direct talks between Tehran and Washington will resume before the deadline expires.
In the meantime, AFP reported that the White House has denied plans to use nuclear weapons against Iran and did not immediately respond to the Wall Street Journal’s request for further comment.
