Iran’s Internet Blackout Crosses 1,296 Hours

NetBlocks, an independent internet monitoring organization, has announced that the internet blackout in Iran has surpassed 1,296 hours. In a post on its X account, the organization stated: “Internet shutdown in Iran has now entered its 55th consecutive day; after 1,296 hours, network connectivity has dropped to about 2% of normal levels, effectively reaching near-zero status. Restrictions on access to the global network continue, disrupting online commerce, payment systems, and sectors of the economy dependent on digital technology.”

Previously, the spokesperson for the Islamic Republic government had officially announced that “white SIM cards” would be issued to those who can “convey the people’s voice.” Now, NetBlocks suggests that the number of white SIM card holders in Iran is approximately 2%. This implies that 98% of the Iranian population is either not trusted by the ruling establishment or does not promote narratives favorable to the Islamic Republic.

Since the beginning of the war involving the U.S. and Israel against the Islamic Republic, the Iranian people’s access to free information and the internet has been completely severed, with only a small group of individuals closest to the ruling establishment being allowed to use the internet. This internet blackout has persisted even after the announcement of a ceasefire between the United States and the Islamic Republic.

During the war involving the U.S. and Israel, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi claimed in interviews with international media that the internet shutdown in Iran was solely to “protect the people during wartime” and had no other reason. However, the internet blackout has continued even after the war, during the current ceasefire.
